Children's Games
The pumpkins were carved and all set in place, one at each window and door. High chattering voices edged with anticipation filled the crisp autumn air. Children sat in clusters of two or three across every garden and street in the village. Each one in a white smock, painting their holiday masks. Cloth and papermache molded after creatures real or fantastic, here a wolf and there a bear with a golden horn, and another with a mask that could be a demon or a troll.
Millicent walked among them, a girl barely old enough to be allowed to grow her hair long. She smiled and asked each one as she passed, "What's that you're making there?" A question
